Our UK Leadership Development Phase is designed to develop vital life skills and help students prepare for the challenges that they will face whilst on expedition and in their everyday lives in the future.
The phase is delivered in a hybrid format of both face-to-face and interactive, online events. Along with additional supporting activities, resources, and materials to help teams get ready for travel.
With our guidance, energy and support you will benefit from every aspect of the expedition experience. From self-funding and planning through to your leadership weekend, our aim is that you are fully prepared and motivated to maximise the learning opportunities that await you - both on your expedition and beyond!
During this interactive, online event, you will be given an opportunity to voice your aims & objectives, contribute to your itinerary and discuss and agree the team aims and learning outcomes for the expedition. It's also where you'll be introduced to key themes such as Leader in Me, Responsible Travel and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
Start working collaboratively; you will be encouraged to set up regular meetings to help bond with your team-mates, whilst sharing your strengths, fears hopes and expectations for the expedition.
You'll also start working on self-funding ideas and planning, as a team and individually.
Meet your assigned Expedition Leader face-to-face at school, and get detailed information on kit, equipment, pre-departure requirements and the in-country support package.
You’ll spend time focusing on expedition life, continue building your team and learn about the roles and challenges you are likely to experience.
Taking place in one of the UK's National Parks, your Practical Leadership Weekend prepares you for the challenges of expedition.
It's a great opportunity to build on those all important team work skills as well as practice some of the leadership roles that you'll take on in-country such as budgeting, preparing meals and managing equipment.
You'll also take part in a trek of a similar challenge level to the one you'll will be tackling overseas.
Usually the day before departure, this is an opportunity for a final check of your personal/group kit and documentation to make sure you have everything you need to travel.
You'll also run through the itinerary details and assign group roles for the first leg of the journey.
Dates for your development events will be confirmed by the Link Teacher and available to view in your Basecamp portal once confirmed.
