Human development and the accompanying destruction of the natural habitat, including illegal hunting has led to a decline in wildlife populations which has caused many species to be in danger of extinction.
Proyecto ASIS believe that by helping injured wild animals and educating the public on these animals' struggles, they will restore the balance between man and nature.
THe volunteer centre works closely with Costa Rica's Ministry of the environment and Energy and the Monteverde Conservation League.
Located just outside the breathtaking Children's Eternal Rainforest, Costa Rica's largest private reserve, teams take an active role at the centre. They have the opportunity to work with a variety of species including monkeys, macaws and sloths.
Teams can choose to stay for any duration up to 7 days, staying in homestays in the local community. It's a fantastic opportunity for immersion in the Spanish Costa Rican culture and a chance to practise Spanish!
Expedition teams work closely with animals, alongside other international volunteers. They help with the maintenance of the facilities, preparation of the animals' food and also help to clean the enclosures and living areas.
It's a unique opportunity for teams looking to be near and learn more about wild animals and help in their rehabilitation.
ASIS was amazing and a highlight for many on the trip. The team who run the project were so enthusiastic and welcoming. We got straight into things at the homestay which the students really enjoyed and kept talking about throughout the trip. We felt like we were helping with a truly worthwhile undertaking. The approach the team took with the animals, making sure they were not treated like tourist selfie attractions but wild animals in care was very good. Totally amazing people!
