Once an expedition has gone live, the planning, training and fun can begin!
Our UK Leadership Development Phase is designed to develop vital life skills and help students prepare for the challenges that they will face whilst on expedition and in their everyday lives in the future.
The phase is delivered in a hybrid format of both face-to-face and interactive, online events. Along with additional supporting activities, resources, and materials to help teams get ready for travel.
This is where you start to get to know one another, your collective aims and objectives for your expedition, and start to set targets for self-funding.
Your first interactive, online event will provide you with an opportunity to discuss your personal goals and bond with your team. It's also when you'll be introduced to some of the key themes for the next 18 months including; Leader in Me, Responsible Travel and Pay Your Way.
The ‘personal touch’ of a face-to-face session helps create the sense of community within the team which encourages interaction, socialisation, and importantly – trust. For leaders, it’s important they get to know and understand the team early on, in a way that cannot be ascertained from a virtual call.
At this face-to-face session, teams and parents meet their assigned Expedition Leader, who also provides detailed information on kit, equipment, and any pre-departure requirements.
They also learn about each of the different roles that they will be taking on whilst overseas and present the expedition itinerary to parents.
To prepare students for the challenges of expedition, teams spend a weekend with their Leader in a UK National Park.
It's an opportunity to build on those all-important team work skills as well as practise some of the leadership roles that the team will take on in country such as budgeting, preparing meals and managing equipment.
The team will also take part in a trek of a similar challenge level to the one they will be tackling overseas.
This is an opportunity for a final check of personal/group kit and documentation, making sure everyone has everything they need and is ready to travel.
The team also run through the itinerary details and assign group roles for the first leg of the journey.
Every family’s financial situation is different, so we strongly encourage and support young people to self-fund the majority – if not the entirety – of the expedition cost so that everyone has the opportunity to experience the adventure of a lifetime.
Outlook provides support, resources and inspiration from initial sign up all the way through to the final payment date, to help students stay motivated and on track. For more information head to our Pay Your Way page.
