One of the most rewarding and valuable elements of participating in an Expedition or Explore trip is self-funding.
Universities and employers respect the commitment and entrepreneurship that a young person demonstrates in this phase. For these reasons we encourage our participants to self-fund the majority, or if not, the entirety of the amount. Every family's financial situation is different so self funding is a way to enable every young people to experience the adventure of a lifetime!
It’s about putting students in the driving seat so that they develop skills for life; managing money, record keeping, self-motivation, goal setting and target achievement.
There are so many ways to self-fund, and most participants plan their own individual initiatives as well as activities with their team members.
Outlook provides support, resources and inspiration from initial sign up all the way through to the final payment date, to help students stay motivated and on track.

Every year we're blown away by the creativity, entrepreneurship, and talent of our students in coming up with innovative ideas to generate their expedition funds.
In 2022, we wanted to celebrate our most entrepreneurial, resourceful and talented participants - inspiring others with creative, money-making methods along the way!
That's when we launched our Pay Your Way Awards, asking students to tell us all about their self-funding successes and the innovative ways they're using to reach their self-funding goals.
We were thrilled to announce Alfie Howell as our winner, who partnered with a local charity to make the most of the 'rags' donated by giving them new leases of life and selling them on at car boot sales. Not only did Alfie generate all-important funds for his expedition, he also doubled the money the charity would have received from simply weighing in the rags. An incredible rags to riches story that contributed to the expedition, a local charity, and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals - a worthy winner indeed!
Students will have access to case studies from the Pay Your Way Awards and will also have their chance to enter and win money off their expedition!
