Organise an event
Staging an event requires a range of skills; planning, promotion, budgeting and negotiation to name a few. All the work can be really worthwhile though as events can be big earners. Here are some ideas:
- Curry or Pizza Night at a local restaurant. Sell tickets for a fixed price, including a meal and entertainment, making sure you build in some profit for you!
- Film night at school or low cost local venue. Set up a concession stand to earn more from selling sweets and popcorn.
- Games night or Bingo evening - sell strips or charge for entry into games and sell a range of drinks to maximise profits.
- Coffee morning - sell a range of hot drinks and cakes, run a raffle for added income.
Take on a challenge
There are loads of organised sponsored events you could enter to generate income for your expedition and improve your fitness in the process. If sport isn't really your thing, then why not create your own challenge and ask for sponsorship.
- Run a 5k, 10k or half marathon - find a race near you here
- Sign up to a Tough Mudder event
- Plan an abseil down a local landmark
- Plan your own challenge and track it on the a running or cycling app - get friends and family to pledge an amount per kilometre
Start a business
Some of our previous participants have created small enterprises to generate income and learn valuable business skills at the same time. Check out our Journal for some of the success stories.
Here are some other ideas to kick off your business empire! You could sell services or a product - do some market research first to see where there might be the most demand.
- Create handmade gifts or your own music CD and sell them at events or online*
- Offer odd job services - gardening, babysitting, painting - create flyers and distribute to the local area
- Maths or science whizz? Offer tutoring services to families with younger children
There are a number of free e-commerce website building tools available, including wix.com. Why not give it a go to promote your business?
Get a job
A regular job is a great way of securing a steady flow of income. Get in touch with local businesses by letter or email - mention you're earning the cost of your expedition and it might just help you to clinch the deal!
- Deliver newspapers or leaftlets
- Work in a shop, including stacking shelves
- Saturday staff in a hairdressers
- Seasonal office work
- Waiting tables in a restaurant, hotel or cafe
Ask local business for support
Why not offer the chance for a local business to sponsor your team in exchange for promotion? Many businesses do this for local sports teams and you could offer do to the following for them:
- Put an advert in your school newsletter
- Print team t-shirts with their logo on and where them at fundraising events
- Give them headline sponsorship of an event you're running
- Contact the local paper to get coverage for your expedition
Go Traditional
If it isn't broken, why fix it? Some of the best ideas are the most tried and tested.
- Organise a raffle or online auction
- Run a stall at your school fete or Christmas fair
- Set up a regular cake stall or tuck shop at school
- Guess the number of sweets in the jar
