This trip offers you an introduction to traditional Finnish winter activities which may be new for most people. These activities take place over consecutive days. The most strenuous activity on this itinerary is the snowshoeing. The snowshoeing journey is planned to cover distances up to 10km each day, which will take around 6 hours including regular stops and a picnic lunch. You do not need any prior experience of snowshoeing as you will receive an introductory session on the techniques. In terms of fitness levels and preparation you can do prior to your trip, it would be beneficial and increase your enjoyment of the activity if you are comfortable walking this distance.
Finnish culture is not too dissimilar to the UK, making it a destination with a low cultural challenge rating. Transport options are very efficient, and your accommodation will be in log cabins with good facilities. Finnish people have a close connection with nature. You will be introduced to the Finnish way of life gaining knowledge on wilderness skills, the flora and fauna and experiencing a traditional Finnish sauna which the Finnish see as a cleansing of both the body and the soul.
Winter is the longest season in Finland, with snow covering the ground from November to April. The coldest time is between December through to February, where temperatures can drop as low as -30°, and daylight hours are greatly reduced. The temperature, although cold, can often feel mild.
