During this itinerary you will be involved in a turtle conservation project that includes snorkelling and nightly beach patrols. You should be physically prepared for this. Although you will be active and working hard, the itinerary also includes some more relaxed activities, such as a city tour and working amongst local communities.

It is not necessary for you to have a high level of fitness for this trip though you will need to be mentally and physically prepared.

• During your night patrols you could be walking up to 10km on soft sand, this will be challenging, and you should ensure you can comfortably walk 10km on uneven terrain prior to your arrival in Malaysia.
• You’ll want to make sure you have a good level of sprint endurance as you’ll take part in beach games with the local children, they’re full of energy and will test even the fittest of people!
• You will be spending a lot of time in the sea taking part in turtle surveys, you should be a confident swimmer and someone who feels relaxed and calm in the water.

You want to think about the environmental factors and how this will impact on the above points, if you feel fit enough to undertake these activities in the UK, make sure you’re fit enough to do them twice, 80% humidity makes work very difficult.

Malaysia is home to a vibrant mix of Asian cultures, with each ethnic group having its own language and cultural practices. This is demonstrated by the many varieties of cuisines and huge difference in landscapes and lifestyles that are adopted by the locals, ranging from traditional living in primary jungle, through to modern lifestyles in cities at the forefront of development.

Malaysia maintains high temperatures all year around, although during your itinerary you will be enjoying cooler temperatures around the coast. Total rainfall is lower than neighbouring countries, resulting in an infrastructure that is less widely affected by inclement weather and life in rural areas is likely to be more manageable.
