From Planning to Participation: Why Our Product Managers Go on Expedition
There is far more happening behind the scenes than meets the eye when it comes to delivering an expedition, none of the experiences on expedition happen by chance. Behind every detail, from accommodation and transport to cultural immersion and community engagement, is a team of dedicated planners and product managers. These are the people who shape each journey, ensuring it runs smoothly, safely and meaningfully.
That is why, this Easter, we sent one of our product managers, Beth Turner, to Morocco to join a team on expedition.
Why Send a Planner on Expedition?
Because the best way to understand an expedition is to experience one.
Firsthand Experience Means Smarter Planning
Expedition itineraries are more than a checklist. They are dynamic, multi layered experiences that unfold in real time. By walking alongside students, feeling the intensity of the treks and seeing the logistics in motion, Beth gained invaluable insight into the rhythm of a real expedition.
From managing timing and pacing to observing how teams adapt and bond, Beth now has a clear, lived understanding of how every element of the journey fits together and where we can make adjustments to deliver even better outcomes.
Walking in the Team’s Shoes Means Stronger Support
It is one thing to plan rest days. It is another to feel the need for one after a long trek.
Beth’s time in Morocco gave her empathy, not just for the students, but for the teachers, leaders and local guides who work hard to make the expedition successful. She saw firsthand where moments of support or celebration matter most, and how seemingly small details like the order of activities or food options can have a big impact on morale and energy.
"Being on the ground with a team completely changed the way I look at planning. I now understand where the pressure points are and where the magic moments happen. I am excited to bring that perspective back to the UK and make sure future expeditions are even more seamless, empowering and enjoyable. I have got a better understanding of the niggles, the little things that can either derail or elevate an experience, and I am ready to use that insight to make every itinerary even stronger."
— Beth Turner, Product Manager, Outlook Expeditions
Cultural Connection Means Richer Experiences
Expeditions are as much about human connection as they are about physical challenge. While in Morocco, Beth experienced the hospitality of local communities, saw the real world impact of our service learning projects and built relationships with in country partners.
That kind of cultural immersion is irreplaceable. It helps us ensure that every experience we design is respectful, enriching and deeply rooted in local context.
Passion Translates into Purpose
When our team members live the experience, they return with renewed drive. They do not just know why our expeditions matter, they feel it.
Beth came back buzzing with energy, excited to make things better and deeply connected to the mission we live every day: helping young people discover the world and themselves through challenge, reflection and teamwork.
Why It Matters
Sending planners like Beth on expedition is not a luxury. It is a strategic investment. It improves our planning, strengthens our team’s empathy and leads to better outcomes for every student and teacher we serve.
At Outlook Expeditions, we believe that the best experiences come from those who truly understand the journey. That is why we will keep putting our people in the field, so they can return with the insight, experience and passion to design expeditions that are not just well run but unforgettable.
